This Moment Will Never Happen Again

What would you say if I told you that this moment would never happen again? Well, it’s true. There are no repeats, re-runs, re-dos. All you’ve got is this very moment, right now.

I realized this fact (again) while driving home from work the other day. “I survived the week!” I thought, as if merely getting through was the goal. And yet, surely it can seem that way sometimes… “Just let me get through this meeting, this doctor’s appointment, this day, this event, this conversation, and I’ll feel better, I’ll be able to relax.” I know that I’ve had these thoughts on many occasions. Probably you too.

And maybe right now you’re even thinking — “wow, this is GREAT news! I don’t ever want to experience this moment again!” But it’s a double-edged sword: the good stuff is a one-time-only proposition as well. That amazing moment where everything clicked… no repeats there either.

So, knowing that you’re not going to get a re-do, will you linger for an extra moment in that hug? Will you gaze directly into your lover’s eyes? Will you savor the sweetness of your friend’s smile a little longer? Will you drink it all in with a deep breath? Will you allow your heart to swell up with feeling? Will you listen more deeply, more fully? Will you let go of the small stuff (and realize that it’s all small stuff)? Will you untangle yourself from the story in your head? Will you be here now?

Because when it’s done, it’s done.

Yes, other moments will happen and some will be better/worse than this moment, but This Moment, THIS VERY MOMENT, right now will never happen again.
